COACH SPAZIANI TALKS HERZLICH AND THE UPCOMING SEASON

Coach Spaz participated in the 2009 ACC Kickoff in Greensboro, NC and talked about the upcoming season and the hurdles that they'll have to overcome. Here's what he had to say about Herzlich:

"It was devastating news...In my years of coaching, I always tell kids to expect the unexpected. Whatever happens in life or in a football game, we have to deal with it. As cliché as it sounds, we told the kids and after the initial shock, we just dealt with it. That's what our kids have to do. We will help Mark in whatever way we can."

Spaziani continued, "Youth be served. When you're 21 years old, you think you are invincible. He's a competitor and he just looks at this like a bump in the road - granted a bigger bump - but it's nothing he can't handle."

Coach Spaz has been great throughout this whole process and we'll be there every game this season in support.

Mark continues with his rigorous radiation and chemo cocktail through this week. We at HerzNation hope it's going as planned.

MARK HERZLICH TREATMENT UPDATE

Here is the most recent update on Herzlich's treatment:

"Next Monday, July 27th, Mark starts a new regime. He will have early morning radiation treatment at HUP (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania). He is being treated by the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine which is a new state-of-the-art center. After his morning radiation he will head across the city to Pennsylvania Hospital to have five hours of chemotherapy. When this is completed, he heads back to HUP for his second round of radiation. He will have a long day!"

"Mark will have this schedule of radiation, chemo, radiation every day for five days. The following two weeks he will have the early morning and late afternoon radiation treatments each day and the fourth week he will go back to the radiation, chemo, radiation schedule. The fifth week will be the two radiation treatments a day."

"All of his doctors are very pleased with his progress and believe that he will continue to tackle this next stage with the same determination and positive attitude that he has demonstrated in the past several months. He is ready for this step which will get him closer to the time that he can return to BC with his friends, teammates, coaches, professors and fans."

"Mark and the rest of his family appreciate all of the support, prayers and positive energy that has been sent his way!"

We at HerzNation are so pleased to hear of this news. It looks like the next few weeks will be the most grueling, but lets hope this radiation and chemo combo knock the cancer out for good.

Hey Mark, Keep your strength up, and be safe out there on the road. Stay Up!

MARK HERZLICH ENTERS SECOND PHASE OF TREATMENT

Mark Herzlich Update – July 10, 2009

"We’ve effectively entered the second phase of Mark’s treatment."

"On Monday July 6th, we had another round of tests done – an MRI, an X-Ray and a CT Scan. These tests help the doctors track the progress of the treatment and based upon that progress, determine what form the balance of his treatment will take. The good news is that all the tests came back as well as or better than we could have expected."

"The CT Scan showed that the cancer had remained localized and hadn’t spread to other parts of Mark’s body. This is what we expected but confirming it is important because the probability of success goes way up when the disease doesn’t mestastize."

"The X-Ray showed no fracture of the femur – again, what we expected but important to verify none the less. It also showed that the cancer has been reduced from the chemo therapy to just a small bump on the bone within a tightly contained area."

"The MRI showed that the tumor has essentially been completely removed from the soft muscle tissue. Whereas the muscle area was lit up like a Christmas tree on the first MRI, there was nothing to be found on this week’s. That’s huge since the lack of continuing soft tissue involvement opens the door to more treatment options."

"Overall the doctors are extremely pleased with the results of the chemotherapy and the progress Mark’s made to date....Bottom line is that things continue to progress well. As the docs have told us repeatedly, we’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re certainly on the right path."

This update is great news for Mark and his family. May the treatment continue to kick this cancer's ass.

Thanks to all that have sent messages and well wishes. I encourage you to continue to comment on this page, and if you want to see what Mark is up to right now, check him out on Twitter.
