Newport Beach, Ca. – Boston College Linebacker Mark Herzlich, who has missed the entire 2009 football season while undergoing treatment for cancer, will receive an honorary Lott Trophy, it was announced today by the Board of Directors of The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the award.
It is only the second time an honorary Lott Trophy has been awarded, the first going to the family of Pat Tillman in 2004. Tillman, the former college and NFL standout, volunteered for the military and was killed in Afghanistan.
“Mark Herzlich represents all that is good in today’s student-athlete and epitomizes what we look for in Lott Trophy candidates,” said John Hamilton, Chairman of the Board of the IMPACT Foundation. “His perseverance, attitude and good works are an inspiration to all of us who love college football.”

ReplyDeleteI'm a CMU alum, writing this as I watch BC and CMU play. So are many people from both our colleges, but its a bigger deal to me perhaps to watch the coverage about your personal battles off the field. In 1990 I was also diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. It was also for me during the time between my junior and senior year of college. At the time, I was attending Washington State University. I wasn't an athlete, and I didn't have the mental strength I perceive in you. But I do remember the shock of such a rare diagnosis at what felt like the prime of my life. I eventually returned to school after my treatment and graduated in 1993, and went on to graduate school at CMU. I'm now a college professor, a wife, and a Mom (adopting a 13 year old this year!). I will Pray till it Herz!
