ACC = A Conference with Class

Open Letter From The Herzlich Family-

My son is Mark Herzlich, the Boston College linebacker who has spent the past 7 months battling cancer. I just wanted to send you a note saying how impressed my entire family has been by the comraderie and sportsmanship of the schools in the ACC. From opposing teams, to their fans and even to the officials organization - everyone has been supportive of Mark in his efforts. The number of groups that sacrificed personally to raise funds in Mark's honor to support cancer research has been awesome and humbling.

We are blessed and grateful that it appears that Mark has beaten this awful disease and his level of recuperation over the next 6 months will determine whether he can return to the playing field. His intent is to do so. However, before we start down that next path I wanted to relflect upon and appreciate how much the ACC has made this intial part of the journey bearable.

I truly think that this is something unique to the ACC. It is a conference with class. In reading about the backbiting and vitrolence in amoungst teams of other major conference, it's a pleasure to be associated with one whose members can both compete hammer and tong on the playing field but still appreciate, support and celebrate their opponents. Without quality opponents, there is no game. Too often that's forgotten in the world of sport, but not in the ACC.

Best wishes for a festive and fruitful holiday and bowl season.

Sandon M. Herzlich, Sr.

BC EAGLES MEDIA DAY - MCLAUGHLIN TALKS HERZLICH

Today was media day for the 2009 Boston College Eagles. LB Mike McLaughlin talked Mark Herzlich:

On how much he has spoken with Mark Herzlich:
"Mark is a special kid, he really is. I'm sure he has a million people calling him and asking how everything is going. I just spoke to him Sunday night, the first night we reported, so I'm probably going to give him a call as soon as I can. It's great to hear his voice. He is such an optimistic kid, he's been one of the greats here and he's a good friend of mine on top of that."

On what it would mean to have Herzlich on the sidelines:
"It makes a world of difference. He and I have talked about that and I think that would only benefit the whole team. You're talking about a big-time player and a big-time person, that's who he is. I think it would do nothing but great things to have him around."

CHRIS FOX TALKS HERZLICH AND UPLIFTING ATHLETES ON FOX

COACH SPAZIANI TALKS HERZLICH AND THE UPCOMING SEASON

Coach Spaz participated in the 2009 ACC Kickoff in Greensboro, NC and talked about the upcoming season and the hurdles that they'll have to overcome. Here's what he had to say about Herzlich:

"It was devastating news...In my years of coaching, I always tell kids to expect the unexpected. Whatever happens in life or in a football game, we have to deal with it. As cliché as it sounds, we told the kids and after the initial shock, we just dealt with it. That's what our kids have to do. We will help Mark in whatever way we can."

Spaziani continued, "Youth be served. When you're 21 years old, you think you are invincible. He's a competitor and he just looks at this like a bump in the road - granted a bigger bump - but it's nothing he can't handle."

Coach Spaz has been great throughout this whole process and we'll be there every game this season in support.

Mark continues with his rigorous radiation and chemo cocktail through this week. We at HerzNation hope it's going as planned.

BOSTON COLLEGE LIFT FOR LIFE JULY 30TH

A group of Boston College football players have come together to create the BC Chapter of Uplifting Athletes. The group is working to raise awareness and funds for rare diseases that affect fewer than 200,000 Americans. First order of business will be the First Annual Boston College Lift For Life Event benefitting Ewing's Sarcoma, the rare form of bone cancer that has sidelined Senior Linebacker Mark Herzlich.

Watch the 2009 Eagles take on each other and get a sneak preview for the upcoming season, while they help raise awareness for this rare form of bone cancer. I applaud your efforts guys. Keep it up.

Show your support and make a donation in Mark Herzlich's name. Let's help the BC Chapter beat their fundraising goals!

SHOT OF HERZLICH FROM THE SPRING GAME

This guy is a monster! Check out this photo of Herzlich from yesterday's spring game at Alumni Stadium. The crowd was small, probably due to the NFL draft and the Red Sox game, but that didn't deter Herzlich from having a big day. Mark lead the Eagles defense to a victory over the offense contributing 9 tackles, one for a loss, and three pass breakups. I pray for the team's sake that the offense gets their shit together and we have a quarterback step up. Lets go Eagles.

In other news... I mentioned yesterday that B.J. Raji was selected 9th by the Packers but I failed to mention Ron Brace's fate. Congratulations Ron! "Ron Brace Yourself" was selected 40th overall by a team that you might have heard of...that's right. The New England Patriots! Ron will be close to home next season and I'm psyched for him. Well done Ron.

Check out Ron's NFL Vignette here.

Well tomorrow is the annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game and family fun day Flynn Recreation Complex, directly across from Alumni Stadium. The fun starts at 11:00am and kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm. For those of us that won't be able to make it to the game, BC Athletics is streaming it live on their website, here, starting at 1:00pm EST.

Please be sure to hang around after the game for the autograph signing and be sure to stop by and meet Mark. Let me know what you think about the team.

Who do you think should start at quarterback this season?

SPRING GAME AND FAMILY FUN DAY

Check out the press for the first BC Eagles spring game, April 25th 2009 at Alumni Stadium, sponsored by BMW of Peabody. This is the sneak peak for the ads that will be run in the Herald and the Globe in a few days. This pretty much confirms that Herzlich is the face of Boston College for the 2009 season.

Not that I'm surprised. Not only is Herzlich 6foot4, 240, with a huge beard, and intimidating eye black. He's wicked smart and he's got a smile that would melt any mothers heart and probably even make your girlfriend do a double take. I applaud Boston College marketing for finally figuring it out. Plus Herzlich's last season numbers don't hurt.

Sadly, I can't make it to the game but I suggest that all of you go and remember to hit up the autograph signing and meet Herzlich in person. You'll see what I'm talking about. But bring a sack lunch because I know that the line for Herzlich's table is going to be around the block. Let me know how it goes.

(Also. Can we get Spaziani a new photo. He looks like a chump with that smile. Have some respect for the new head coach.)

New 2009 TICKET SALES PRESS

Check out the 2009 Season Ticket Sales image. See anyone familiar?

I know that times are tough but $175 for Season Tickets? That's it? So what you're telling me is that I pay you one hundred and seventy five dollars and I get to see the best hits in college football for an entire season? This is too good to be true!

Thanks BC Athletics you have done right by me. I live all the way in Los Angeles and I'm considering picking up a pair just to say that I have season tickets to BC Eagles football. Well played.

And the Music City Bowl Logo. That should get us fired up for next season more than anything.
